The Agents Are Coming: How AI Employees Will Transform Advice
Four AI agent roles — Adviser, Paraplanner, Compliance Officer, Administrator — will fundamentally reshape how advice firms operate. Human-in-the-loop, not human-out-of-the-loop.
The next evolution of AI in financial advice isn't better chatbots or faster summarisation. It's agents — autonomous AI workers that can execute complex, multi-step tasks with minimal human oversight. Think of it this way. Current AI tools are like calculators: you input something, they process it, you get an output. AI agents are like employees: you give them an objective, and they figure out the steps, gather the information, and complete the work. In advice, we see four primary agent roles emerging. The AI Adviser Agent handles client-facing preparation — researching market conditions, analysing client circumstances, preparing meeting briefs, and drafting initial recommendations. The AI Paraplanner Agent generates suitability reports, conducts fund analysis, processes fact finds, and produces the documentation that currently consumes most of a paraplanner's week. The AI Compliance Agent monitors every client interaction in real-time, checking recommendations against regulatory requirements, flagging vulnerability indicators, and maintaining audit trails automatically. The AI Admin Agent manages scheduling, client communications, document filing, CRM updates, and the thousand small tasks that fragment an adviser's day. These agents operate across two vectors: Roles (WHO does the work) and Skills (WHAT work gets done). A single agent can develop multiple skills over time, becoming more capable as it learns your firm's specific requirements. Crucially, this is human-in-the-loop, not human-out-of-the-loop. Every significant decision, every client recommendation, every compliance judgement requires human approval. The agents do the work; the humans make the calls. This isn't about replacing advisers. It's about giving every adviser a full support team that works around the clock, never makes data entry errors, and gets better every day.
